KC Jukebox presents: Mercury Soul

Thurs Mar 15, 2018 – 8pm
815 V St. NW Washington D.C.
Mercury Soul, the acclaimed hybrid musical event that has packed clubs from Chicago to its home in San Francisco, comes to the 930 Club for a groovy collision of DJing, classical pop-ups, and immersive production.   Created by Kennedy Center’s composer-in-residence Mason Bates, the show is a co-production between the Center’s KC Jukebox series and the 930 Club.  This visceral “classical rave” features new music by some of today’s most talked-about composers, with the D.C. premieres of works by Derek Bermel, Ted Hearne, Jennifer Higdon, Missy Mazzoli, and Bates himself, who does double duty as house DJ alongside DJ Justin Reed of Chicago’s illmeasures collective. This event is part of the Kennedy Center’s annual new celebration DIRECT CURRENT–an immersive showcase for cutting-edge contemporary arts and culture with a focus on interdisciplinary creations.

Prismatic: Color of Sound

Fri Feb 23, 2018 – 9pm-2am
375 11th St, San Francisco, CA

Mercury Soul returns Feb 23 to DNA Lounge for Prismatic, a dynamic, multimedia-infused concert boldly uniting classical musicians with EDM/electronica in a thumping, club environment. Concertgoers dance and explore the space while being immersed in a world that engages both their eyes and ears, elevating the musical experience through a brilliant array of lighting, projections, and art installations by LED artist Christopher Schardt.

Integrated into sets by DJ Masonic (Mason Bates) and DJ Justin Reed are some of San Francisco’s finest musicians performing “color music” – music inspired by color. Piano trio Steel and Ivory will perform the industrial groove of Michael Torke’s Rust, the violent intensity of Piano Trio – Fiery Red by Jennifer Higdon, synesthetic composer Joel Hoffman’s shimmering Music in Yellow and Green, and music by the renowned Alexander Scriabin – whose concept of a “color organ” will be reinvented as a remix of his music for DJs, live musicians, tightly synchronized lighting, and an interactive light installation by Nick Kanozik. Also on the program will be steel drum group Pankind Trio, evoking the blue of the Caribbean sea with authentic calypso music, and original electro-acoustic interludes composed by Mason Bates for this event that lead in and out of each set, combining the full forces of our DJs and musicians. We’ll wrap the night with an incredible post-show dance party led by DJ JOill.

Fri Feb 24, 2017 – 9pm
DNA Lounge
375 11th St, San Francisco, CA

Mercury Soul is bringing Baroque & Beats to San Francisco’s DNA Lounge to show our fans the wilder side of baroque music. Elevate Ensemble will be playing Vivaldi’s joyfully regal Concerto for Two Trumpets, and two works by Samuel Schedit: Canzona Bergamasca and the rallying battlecry Galliard Battalia. The San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s Baroque Ensemble performing living composer Christopher Theofanidis’ Baroque-inspired Muse, Bach’s Violin Sonata No. 3 in C major, and the effervescent Concerti for Strings in A and C Major (RV 160 & 109 respectively) by Vivaldi.
