DJs & Kinetic Folk Music from Past to Future – feat. DJ Gavin Hardkiss & Hot Buttered Rum
We’re returning to San Francisco’s The Great Northern to dive into the world of folk music with performances of folk-inspired electronic, classical, and bluegrass music, interspersed with DJ sets spanning the global folk music landscape. Headlining the show is the unparalleled DJ Gavin Hardkiss, spinning tracks that fold musical traditions from around the world into a deep house style.
Also joining us is the high-energy Bay Area bluegrass staple Hot Buttered Rum, and virtuoso string quartet Vitamin Em playing classical masterworks from John Adams, Béla Bartók, Mark O’Connor, Brahms and Dvorak. Throughout the night DJs Masonic (Mason Bates) and Justin Reed will keep the dance floor bumping with tracks exploring the countless indigenous music traditions that exist in electronic music, combining folk sounds with pulsing electronica, house, and more.
Mercury Soul is coming to San Franciscos’s The Great Northern for Danzón, a show celebrating Latin American music. Featuring a headlining set by Rob Garza (of the legendary Thievery Corporation), with the first-ever live performance of music from his upcoming “Dissolve” EP, joined by singers Shana Halligan, Stee Downes, and Fare, as well as the Mercury Soul Orchestra featuring arrangements by Grammy-nominated composer/DJ Mason Bates.
Mercury Soul returns Feb 23 to DNA Lounge for Prismatic, a dynamic, multimedia-infused concert boldly uniting classical musicians with EDM/electronica in a thumping, club environment. Concertgoers dance and explore the space while being immersed in a world that engages both their eyes and ears, elevating the musical experience through a brilliant array of lighting, projections, and art installations by LED artist Christopher Schardt.
Integrated into sets by DJ Masonic (Mason Bates) and DJ Justin Reed are some of San Francisco’s finest musicians performing “color music” – music inspired by color. Piano trio Steel and Ivory will perform the industrial groove of Michael Torke’s Rust, the violent intensity of Piano Trio – Fiery Red by Jennifer Higdon, synesthetic composer Joel Hoffman’s shimmering Music in Yellow and Green, and music by the renowned Alexander Scriabin – whose concept of a “color organ” will be reinvented as a remix of his music for DJs, live musicians, tightly synchronized lighting, and an interactive light installation by Nick Kanozik. Also on the program will be steel drum group Pankind Trio, evoking the blue of the Caribbean sea with authentic calypso music, and original electro-acoustic interludes composed by Mason Bates for this event that lead in and out of each set, combining the full forces of our DJs and musicians. We’ll wrap the night with an incredible post-show dance party led by DJ JOill.
